Before we talk specifically about how you are forming your health and fitness goals, I want to have a little chat.
Moms, let’s get real for a minute…
Which is more important to you:
- An Instagram-ready bikini body, or
- Your favorite yummy treat?
It might be red wine, it might be chocolate, it might be French fries.
But the truth is, you shouldn’t have to choose between your favorite yummy treat, and an Instagram-ready bikini body!
Because you’re a grown-up now.
And you’re old enough and wise enough to have started to figure out what really matters in this life, right?
And as we get older and wiser, we realize:
- The joy we feel in our lives is not defined by a number on the scale
- Our ability to connect with those we love has nothing to do with the size of our jeans (or our swimsuit)
- When we are there for someone we love, when someone we love is struggling, we aren’t able to help them because of how our body is shaped, we are able to help them because of how our heart and our spirit are shaped
Why is it important to recognize this?
Because, when it comes to defining healthy, it’s about the big picture, not about how small you can make your butt become.
Should you strive to be the healthiest version of yourself?
100%, yes, absolutely!! Yes, yes, a thousand times, YES!
But not for the reasons you’ve been sold.
You want to be the healthiest version of yourself because that woman:
- Has energy to care for others
- Feels strong and healthy and confident in her body, no matter it shape
- Has the emotional presence to share herself wholeheartedly with those she loves
So, how then should you form your health and fitness goals?
SO glad you asked! (Yes, I know you didn’t actually ask, but I sure hope that your wheels are turning and it’s making you think about how you want to form your health and fitness goals!)
Focus first, and always, on how you want to feel.
This is the question you want to be asking yourself, both short term and long term.
When you form goals, here are the questions to ask yourself:
Question One: What longer-term fitness goal will make me feel super proud?
I love three month goals. I love breaking the year down into races, so if you’re a runner, I highly encourage you to give this a try. (Or if you’re not a runner but want to give running a try, I promise you, this race goal thing is pretty awesome.)
For runners, or those starting out in running, race goals are wonderful because they lend themselves so easily to SMART goals. They’re specific, measurable, action-oriented, realistic, and time-bound!
(If you’re just starting out in running, or have been running for awhile, Mom’s Running Club is an amazing community of moms where you can connect, learn, and share your journey! You can find out more here.)
If you’re not a runner, your longer-term fitness goal may be to get through your favorite yoga class without taking a break, or finishing a particular on-demand program (Beachbody rocks for this!), or getting to your favorite spin class three times per week for three months.
What matters most? Choose a goal that will make you super proud, will challenge you, and that you can achieve with hard work.
Because those are the feelings you want to feel.
Question Two: How do I want to eat, today, to go to bed feeling strong and confident and joy-filled?
Did you catch that? Eating should be about a feeling, too!
Choosing foods throughout the day that give you energy, help keep your gut happy, taste delicious, give you tons of great nutrients… those are the foods you want to be choosing.
AND you want to be choosing foods that make your taste buds happy and bring you joy.
If, throughout your day, you keep those thoughts top of mind, and you consistently strive to make the choices that will make you go to bed feeling like you did right by your body, your weight will sort itself out.
Is there room there for cocktails and chocolate? You betcha! Enjoy your cocktail or chocolate! As long as you do it in such a way that it fits with an entire day of helping you go to bed feeling strong and confident, it fits!
Question Three: How do I want to move TODAY so that I feel strong, clear my head, find the endorphins I know will make me feel better, and know that I gave my best?
Fitness makes you happy! Endorphins serve a purpose: to make you feel happy!
You want to always have that long-term fitness goal out there, AND today, you’ll find your strength, you’ll clear your head, you’ll find your happy endorphins, by working hard to support that goal!
Remember: if you make decisions based on how you want to feel, the weight will sort itself out.
Will you reach the weight you thought you wanted to reach? Maybe. Maybe not. But I promise you this: if you consistently focus on how you want to feel, even with the hiccups and the imperfections and the days where Oreos are lunch, over time, that consistency will:
- Help you create a body that is truly healthy, truly fit and strong, truly well-nourished and well-hydrated, and
- Whatever that weight or size is, you’ll feel great about it, because you know you are doing the best you can with the body God gave you.
